July 14, 2004 Washington, D.C.-- Raising funds and raising awareness for a new charity is a full time job, and the Berhanu Soccer Foundation has found it’s way into the realm of success stories. After their first event they managed to raise over ten thousand dollars for the fund, and raise attention for the foundation at the same time. Over 150 people attended the event held June 5th at the home of Meserat Berhanu, in Potomac, Maryland. “It’s a glorious feeling to see the outpouring of support for my late husband’s dreams and visions,” said Mrs. Berhanu. “All these friends not only show interest in the world’s most popular sport but also to the kids who will benefit from this worthy cause.” The foundation plans to hold events throughout the year which will be relevant to the Washington DC Metro area soccer world and that focus on the local leagues for middle school-aged boys and girls. They have made a great start toward their first year fundraising goal of $25,000. The Berhanu Soccer Foundation will provide grants, initially of up to $1000, to assist with the costs of playing at the club level each year. It will identify candidates through the coaches and selected clubs nominating candidates who meet the criteria created by the foundation for review. Each $1,000 grant will be used to help qualified players compete at an elite level. “With every donation we receive, the dreams of child who lives for soccer will be helped”, said friend and Foundation supporter Jeremy Tofts.
