Spring 2007 Berhanu Soccer Foundation Celebrates 2006-2007 Grant Awardees .
Washington Freedom Coach Clyde Watson Was Keynote Speaker
Forty-three athletes were honored at the Third Annual Berhanu Soccer
Foundation awards celebration held at the Women’s Club of Chevy Chase on
April 17th. These talented players representing over 30 clubs from Maryland,
Virginia and the District of Columbia represent the largest group of
awardees in the three years Berhanu has been awarding grants. The night’s
events were highlighted by a speech by Clyde Watson of the Washington
Freedom.
Summer 2006 Berhanu Soccer Foundation Awards 36 Grants
for Fall 2006 Season

We are pleased to announce that the Berhanu Soccer Foundation will award
grants to over 30 athletes for the Fall 2006 season. The 16 full and 20
partial grants represent the largest amount of awards in the Foundation’s
history. In fact, the number of awards more than tripled the grants awarded
last spring. Due to such a large increase in applications from qualified
players, the Berhanu Soccer Foundation has created a tiered award program.
We will now award either full grants or partial grants to players as
financial conditions permit.
Spring 2006 Eleven Grants
Awarded to Local Athletes for Spring 2006

The Berhanu Soccer Foundation is proud to announce the recipients of the
grants for the Spring 2006 season. These young athletes, who come from
throughout the Washington DC area have all demonstrated both a talent for
the game and strength of character and spirit as well.
The new awardees include both returning and new grant winners, representing
teams from National Capital Soccer League (NCSL), Washington Area Girls
Soccer (WAGS) and the Olympic Development Program (ODP). They are Ikumi,
Laurel Lightning; Joseph, ODP; Noah, Olney Dragons; Mammadou, Potomac
Fusion; Nicole, MSC Bulls; Oriseloka, Heroes; James, Olney Arsenal; Chante,
Bethesda Rapids; James, Inter Bethesda; Lauren, Laurel Lightning and Demar,
Bethesda Mavericks.
Berhanu Soccer Foundation now turns its sights on finding more worthy
candidates for the Fall 2006 grants, expected to be awarded this September.
It also has embarked on a fund raising effort from local organizations to be
able to reach more athletes. The Berhanu Soccer Foundation continues to
build relationships with soccer clubs and teams and create a bigger presence
with organizations and businesses interested in the Washington DC metro area
market.

Thirteen Grants Awarded to Local Athletes for Fall
2005

The Berhanu
Soccer Foundation is pleased to announce it has increased grants for
Fall 2005 to 13 athletes, up from five the previous year. The grants are awarded to
initial season grantees as well as 8 new athletes. The initial awards are between $500 and $1000, which
will help cover the spring season costs for ODP (Olympic Development
Program) or NCSL (National Capital Soccer League) for the boys and WAGS
(Washington Area Girls Soccer) for the girls. Berhanu Soccer Foundation
now turns its sights on fund raising and finding more worthy candidates for the 2006
fall season. The Berhanu Soccer Foundation continues to build relationships with soccer clubs and teams and create a
bigger presence with organizations and businesses interested in DC metro area
youth athletics in general and youth soccer in particular.

The Berhanu Soccer Foundation Kickoff Event
is a Big Success Over $17,000 raised for the new foundation Raising funds and raising awareness for a new charity is a full time
job, and the Berhanu Soccer Foundation has found it’s way into the realm of
success stories. After their first event they managed to raise over ten
thousand dollars for the fund, and raise attention for the foundation at the
same time.
